The military salutes in a variety of situations. If you are not in the military, or are in civilian clothes, you are invited to place your right hand over your heart when the military salutes during a military funeral. You can cue off what the military members are doing to know when to place your hand over your heart. If you want more information, the general rule of thumb is: If you are moving by the flag and it is not moving, place your right hand over your heart as you pass. On the other hand, if you are standing still and the flag is passing, place your hand over your heart as the flag passes. If still in doubt, ask. The Cemetery Representative, who represents Arlington National Cemetery at every service, would be delighted to explain it all to you. What does the military do, and in what order? This depends on the type of funeral service. Depending on the rank of the individual, as well as on some distinctions earned while on active duty, what will be done will vary. The Cemetery Representative can give you details on which type of service it will be, as can the internments section at Arlington National Cemetery. You can also look at the different types of funerals elsewhere at this website to get an idea of what is normally done at Arlington. Where can I get more information? Please remember, however, that this office plays no role whatsoever in determining eligibility, in scheduling, or in determining what honors will be rendered. Musical selections for funeral services in the Chapel must be approved by the officiating Chaplain or religious leader conducting the service. All music used for funeral services should be of a religious and not of a secular nature. This is due to the fact that a Chapel service is fully and completely a religious service. If you wish a non religious memorial event, it should be held elsewhere. Please contact Arlington National Cemetery's Navy Chaplain section at 703-695-6796 if you have any specific questions regarding music. Do I have to have a Chapel service at ANC? No. Many people have services in houses of worship or memorial events in a funeral home before burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Other families decide to hold a memorial service and at another time at another location. In most religious traditions one primary funeral ceremony, such as a funeral or memorial service, is sufficient. Are there any special uniform requirements? Currently serving Chaplains of the Navy normally wear the service dress blue uniform with white gloves and white cover.
